Utility Data & Cost Analysis
Life Cycle Cost Analysis
Strategy & Services: Through the combined initiatives of the PG&E ZNE Schools Pilot Program and CA Prop 39 funding to improve Bay Area educational facilities, Newcastle Elementary qualified for funding assistance to retrofit their building to provide energy efficient and engaging spaces for their students. In collaboration with Point Energy Solutions, stok performed utility data analysis, site visits, energy modeling, and life cycle cost analysis to identify energy efficiency measures with the best financial performance. stok, the Prop 39 team, and the school board examined these measures and selected ones which best fit within the project budget while additionally providing an enhanced learning environment for the students.
Design Details: stok worked diligently to not only meet the ZNE project requirements, but to find a combination of efficient features that would also benefit the students’ wellness and learning experience, showcasing the link between sustainable and healthy building strategies. Recognizing the significant positive impact HVAC upgrades would have on student auditory and visual comfort, stok pushed for portable classroom HVAC upgrades despite their temporary condition, illustrating the health and experience benefits from the energy efficiency measure. stok also uncovered the school’s original clerestory window design for providing natural light, which had since been blocked with ducting. stok saw this as a great opportunity to reintroduce natural and improved lighting strategies for the classrooms, providing an enhanced learning environment for the students.
“stok has become a go-to sustainability resource for our district, having provided years of high quality and reliable services under contract as well as on a volunteer basis. Their focus on the financial side of sustainability is highly beneficial given the Prop 39 requirements, and they consistently provide a greater level of detail and value than what is required for the ASHRAE audits and financial analysis. The team is also easy and enjoyable to work with — their candid nature, open communication, and “get the job done” mentality keeps projects running smoothly.”
– Nik Kaestner, Director of Sustainability, San Francisco Unified School District
Outcome: A successful pilot project, Newcastle Elementary was recognized with the Schools Leadership Award. The final result featured solar PV, classroom daylighting for enhanced classroom experience for students and educators, interior and exterior LED lamps, high efficiency HVAC in the gym, and a comprehensive Building Management System, among other energy efficient and healthy building features.
