San Francisco International Airport (SFO)

San Francisco International Airport (SFO) has set an ambitious goal of becoming the first Triple Zero airport campus in the world—zero waste to landfill, zero net energy facilities, and zero carbon operations—an embodiment of SFO’s pioneering commitment to climate action and a leading example for airports globally. Stok has been providing a broad range of sustainability services to support and proactively achieve this goal, partnering with SFO’s diverse teams to guide all projects to the highest level of sustainable design, construction, and operations.

The Challenge

Setting out to advance the global aviation industry while providing a world-class experience to more than 50 million annual visitors, SFO has engaged Stok on multiple strategic portfolio planning and capital projects to advance its bold Triple Zero airport goal.

By the Numbers

Energy reduction below 2013 levels
Target: 25%
Diversion of airport-controlled Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) and Construction Demolition Debris (C&D) by 2030
Target: 90%
Reduction in greenhouse gas emissions by 2050
Target: 80%

The Solution

WORLD'S FIRST ZERO WASTE AIRPORT

To support SFO’s goal to become the world’s first zero waste airport, Stok is providing zero waste consulting services focused on the creation of a 2024 Zero Waste Plan. As an update to SFO’s landmark 2018 Zero Waste Plan, Stok is partnering with SFO’s Sustainability Team to report on progress achieved, analyze the triple bottom line impacts of the airport’s current and future zero waste initiatives, make technical and programmatic recommendations to advance waste diversion and reduction, and publish an adapted roadmap for reuse.

Stok also identified an innovative opportunity to accelerate the airport toward Triple Zero—a project that supports both SFO energy and waste goals. The proposed concept would implement co-digestion of organic waste along with wastewater sludge at the Mel Leong Treatment Plant at SFO. The potential benefits include increased biogas production from the digesters as a local renewable energy source, reduced greenhouse gas emissions both onsite and at the landfill, and increased diversion of organic waste from landfill in alignment with California mandates.

PORTFOLIO-WIDE SUSTAINABILITY CONSULTING

Stok is providing related sustainability services directly to SFO inclusive of LEED consulting, zero net energy (ZNE) consulting, energy benchmarking, energy auditing, energy modeling, photovoltaic (PV) sizing services, and LEED, Title 24, and monitoring-based commissioning on a number of projects across SFO’s portfolio. This includes the Courtyard 3 Connector (C3C), Ground Transportation Unit (GTU), and multiple projects within Terminal 1.
