LEED v5 is Here: Looking Back and Ahead at the Evolution of Green Building Leadership

With LEED v5 officially launched, Stok is reflecting on the transformative journey of LEED—and our own. With every version of LEED, the bar has been raised. Now, LEED v5 represents a significant step in the evolution of green building leadership.

Decarbonization strategies account for nearly half of the points in v5 rating systems.
      2. Equity, resilience, and biodiversity are no longer optional.
         Social equity, resilience, and ecological integrity now have a more prominent place, reestablishing that LEED v5 isn’t just about buildings and their performance, but a holistic approach to communities and ecosystems.
      3. Material health gets a refresh.
         Building on the legacy of v4, LEED v5 refines material health metrics, integrates circularity and planning for zero waste, embeds embodied carbon reduction requirements, and supports a transparent, responsible supply chain.

         LEED v5 helps bridge the gap between design teams and corporate sustainability leaders. It aligns with reporting frameworks like GRESB and TCFD/IFRS, making it easier for portfolios to integrate certification into broader ESG goals. With v5 certification integrated into the Arc platform, annual reporting and data management will be streamlined.
      5. Designed for the real world.
         LEED v5 is flexible, scalable, and performance-driven, allowing for customization across asset types, geographies, and existing operations. This makes it easier for owners and operators to refine existing sustainability programs and strategies using v5 to certify portfolios without overhauling their existing strategy.
